Oxford Learning Link (OLL) cloud-hosted courses are hosted in an OUP version of the Canvas LMS/VLE. Canvas includes two features that can be used to group your students into cohorts for different purposes:

  • Groups are a small version of a course and used as a collaborative tool where a minimum of two students can work together on group projects and assignments.
  • Sections help subdivide students within a course and offer section-specific options such as varied due dates for assignments, discussions, and quizzes. Sections also display for each student within the course People page and the Gradebook.
    (Note: Each student must be in at least one section at all times. There is a default section for the full course and all students start in this section.)

To set up Sections and/or Groups in your course, follow the steps outlined below.

CREATING SECTIONS

Step 1: Create Your Sections

  1. Log into OLL Courses.
  2. Enter the relevant course.
  3. Go to Settings in the left-hand course menu.
  4. Go to Sections at the top of the page.
  5. Click “+ Section” to create a section.
  6. Enter the name of the Section and click Save.
  7. Repeat Steps 5–6 for each Section you wish to create.

Step 2: Assign Students to Sections

  1. Go to People in the left-hand course menu.
  2. Click the three dots icon to the far right of a student’s name.
  3. Select “Edit Sections.”
  4. Select the Section to which you wish to assign the student.
  5. Click Update.

CREATING GROUPS

Step 1: Create Your Groups

  1. Log into OLL Courses.
  2. Enter the relevant course.
  3. Go to People in the left-hand course menu.
  4. Go to Groups at the top of the page.
  5. If you do not currently have any Group Sets, click “+ Group Set” to create a Group Set. (You must have at least one Group Set before you can create Groups.)
  6. Enter the name of the Group Set.
  7. Set any other desired settings for the Group Set (read more about these settings in the Canvas Instructor Guide).
  8. Click Save.
  9. Within the newly created Group Set, click “+ Group” to create a Group.
  10. Enter the name of the Group and click Save.
  11. Repeat Steps 9–10 for each Group you wish to create.

Step 2: Assign Students to Groups

  1. From the list of unassigned students, drag each student into a Group. (You can also drag students between Groups.)
